Alternative Summer Programs for UCLA Students

In the past years, UCLA has provided little information to first year students about their options for clinical and research opportunities during the summer between first and second year. Although STTP is a great option for students who want to do research at UCLA during the summer, the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) decided to provide more information about other opportunities that include clinical experiences, alternative research options around the nation, and international opportunities. This is a rough copy of some of the opportunities that will be part of the list which will eventually be posted on the FMIG website. Please take the time to skim over your different options, trying to keep an open mind about the different opportunities that are out there. Many of these opportunities are not necessarily in Los Angeles and will give the students the option of getting away from Los Angeles for the summer. There are a few websites posted under international opportunities. Take the time to look at these websites, as a couple of the websites have long lists of different international organizations providing summer programs to medical students. Remember, many of the applications are due starting February so it is worth getting a head start and looking now! Research Opportunities

  • American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Medical Student Research Grant
    • Description: Grants are awarded to medical students interested in laboratory or clinical research to allergy and immunology to encourage careers as clinicians in allergy and immunology.

  • American Diabetes Association Medical Student Scholars Awards
    • Description: These awards provide one year of research support to medical students interested in clinical and basic science diabetes research.

  • American Foundation for Urologic Disease American Urological Association Research Scholar Program

  • American Heart Association Medical Student Research Program
    • Description: The Medical Student Research Program provides eight-, 10- or 12-week awards (continuous in time) to medical students to carry out cardiovascular-related research in a strong laboratory environment.

  • The Endocrine Society Summer Research Fellowships
    • Description: The Endocrine Society offers Summer Research Fellowships to encourage promising medical students to pursue careers in endocrinology.

  • Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research Fellowships
    • Description: The Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship (MSARF) program provides support to both medical students and host departments for 8 to 12 weeks of anesthesia-related research experience and is a new element of FAER's commitment to attract scientific talent to academic anesthesiology.
    • Stipend: $400/week

    • Duration: 8-12 consecutive weeks.

  • Mayo Clinic Health Disparities Clinical Training Program
    • Description: Mayo Clinic's IMSD program funds students to participate in the Clinical Research Training Program to promote research in health disparities. The overall goal of the NIH-funded IMSD program is to increase the numbers of under-represented minority faculty, investigators and students engaged in biomedical research, and to broaden the opportunities for under-represented minority faculty and students for participation in biomedical research.

  • Minority Health and Health Disparities International Research Training (MHIRT) Grant Program
    • Description: The Minority International Research Training (MIRT) program is a component in the long-term National Institutes of Health (NIH) strategy to decrease health disparities between minority and majority groups in the U.S. The MIRT grants are designed to offer research training opportunities to qualified eligible students for ethically underserved backgrounds and faculty to participate in international biomedical and behavioral research programs abroad. The proposed training program is expected to increase awareness of international research issues and opportunities, acquaint students with a range of career opportunities in biomedical and behavioral research and encourage participants to pursue post-baccalaureate degrees and careers in biomedical and behavioral research especially related to minority health problems. The program is also expected to enhance the training efforts and international collaborative research activities of the faculty participant.

  • National Institute of Health Fellow Research Program
    • Description: Basic or clinical research in many disciplines with investigators at more than 20 NIH institutes. See website for complete details. (80-90 funded positions).

  • The Orthopaedic Research & Education Foundation Medical Student Summer Orthopaedic Research Fellowship
    • Description: The objective of this Fellowship is to encourage medical students considering a career in orthopaedics to gain experience in basic, clinical or translational research. The medical student needs to identify an investigator with an ongoing orthopaedic research project who is willing to accept the student as a research assistant and act as his/her mentor.
    • Stipend: $2500

  • Pine Family Foundation for Catastrophic Disease Research
    • Description: The Pine Family Foundation is a small foundation that was started and funded for the purpose of supporting research towards finding cures for "incurable" diseases. We are currently focusing on Alzheimer's and AIDS. We will provide grants and scholarships to researchers and graduate students who are working towards a cure for these diseases.

  • Program for Minority Research Training in Psychiatry
    • Description: The program is designed to increase the number of underrepresented minority men and women in the field of psychiatric research. Research training offers the opportunity to engage in exciting, pioneering scientific investigation across the full array of disciplines, from basic neuroscience, genetics, and pharmacology to the cognitive behavioral, and social sciences, clinical psychiatry, and mental health services research.

  • The RPS/Hartford/AFAR Medical Student Geriatric Scholars Program
    • Description: The 2007 MSTAR Program provides medical students, early in their training, with an enriching experience in aging-related research and geriatrics, under the mentorship of top experts in the field. This program introduces students to research and academic experiences that they might not otherwise have during medical school.
