Safe House, a subsidiary of Friends Research Institute, Inc., is an apartment building located in North Hollywood, California established to provide a comfortable refuge for those who are living with HIV/AIDS using principles of high tolerance. Resident requirements include being at risk for homelessness, HIV positive or AIDS symptomatic, and having serious mental illness or chemical dependency. There are 16 units in the complex designed to provide permanent (unlimited stays), transitional (up to six months), or emergency housing (up to 30 days). There are 13 permanent stay units (1 bed in each), 3 transitional units (2 beds in each), and one emergency unit with 4 beds. Application to receive housing services at Safe House is coordinated through existing AIDS service organizations and treatment facilities.
Safe House was originally funded by a grant from the Los Angeles Housing Department Housing Opportunities for People With AIDS program (HOPWA). Current funding includes HOPWA, the Emergency Food and Shelter Program, the Emergency Housing Program, and the Kenneth T. & Eileen L. Norris Foundation. Past funding was provided by The Aaroe Associates Charitable Foundation, The Morrison & Foerseter Foundation, The Union Bank of California Foundation, and The VONS Companies Charitable Foundation. The mission of Friends Research Institute, Inc. is to promote health and well being through research, grants administration, education and treatment.
