PGYIII - Surgery (Outpatient)

Goals
Upon completion of the rotation, the resident will recognize the importance of family medicine physician and surgeon collaboration in the evaluation and decision-making for the care of surgical patients.
Objectives
Residents will:
Patient Care and Medical Knowledge
- Develop knowledge of a variety of outpatient surgical procedures, including, but not limited to:
- Diagnosis and management of "lumps and bumps"
- Excisional biopsy
- Skin and deep structure closure techniques including selection of closure material
- Cosmesis
- Sterile/aseptic outpatient surgical techniques
- Endoscopic procedures
- For each procedure, develop knowledge and experience including:
- Indications
- Contraindications
- Alternative procedures
- Technique
- Post-Operative management
- Recognition and management of complications
- Indications for referral
- Develop familiarity and experience using various instruments utilized in outpatient surgery
- Develop familiarity with the appropriate CPT and ICD codes used in the procedures performed
- Appropriately record all surgical procedure experiences
Practice Based Learning and Improvement
- Be able to use the internet to access current literature about surgical problems
- Be able to critically evaluate literature about surgical care
- Be able to work well in the context of a surgical clinic and surgical team
- Be able to implement changes in patient care based on new information obtained from Surgeons, clinical experience, review of the literature and other sources
Interpersonal Communication Skills
- Communicate effectively with patients
- Able to communicate in a manner in which the patient with a surgical condition can understand the underlying disease, treatment plan and prognosis
- Able to listen to and address the concerns of patients and their families
- Communicate effectively with colleagues
- Able to work efficiently in the context of a surgical clinic or operating room in a county facility
- Able to work efficiently with the support staff in the care of the surgical patient

Systems-Based Practice
- Demonstrate understanding of the care of the patient with surgical conditions in the context of the current health care system in a Los Angeles County facility
- Coordinate care with ancillary services to improve the healthcare of the patient
- Assist patients and their families in dealing with the surgical condition of the patient

Continuity Clinic - You will have at least 3 continuity clinics a week. Extra continuity clinics may be added based on the availability of surgical clinics at OVMC.
Educational Half Day - Attendance is required.
Call Schedule - This is a no call rotation.
1st Day
- Report at 8 AM to OVMC, 2nd Floor Room 2B-156
- Ask for Cheryl Farnsworth
- You must sign-in on your first day and write "Resident without compensation"
- Cheryl will connect you with Dr. Thompson
