Our Facilities

The Teaching Hospitals

The residency program's core curriculum is concentrated at two main teaching hospitals: Santa Monica/UCLA Medical Center and Olive View/UCLA Medical Center. Other UCLA affiliated hospitals are used in a few selective rotations and are available for electives.

Santa Monica/UCLA Medical Center

Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center has had a strong community presence for over 75 years. This 250-bed hospital is being totally replaced with a new state-of-the-art facility. With a history of being one of the first family medicine residency sites and training Family Medicine Residents for more than 35 years, the community attending staff is most supportive of Primary Care training. The hospital includes full medical, surgical, pediatric and obstetrical services as well as full diagnostic and support services for a socio-economically and ethnically diverse patient population. The Family Medicine Program is the only residency based at the hospital and our residents are responsible for all codes and urgent services in the hospital. A relatively new addition under UCLA is the use of a hospitalists/intensivist model to cover the intensive care units and provide educational support for our Family Medicine residents.

Olive View/UCLA Medical Center

Olive View/UCLA Medical Center is a public hospital affiliate which is owned by the LA County Department of Health Services. Located 20 miles north of UCLA (and 10 miles north of our Mid Valley Family Health Center), this 280-bed structure sits among an old 600-acre olive grove in the foothills of the Northern San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles. Legally mandated to provide care to all who seek it, it provides services to a predominately Latino immigrant working class population of which 50% are uninsured. With no free standing residency programs of its own, Olive View is staffed by UCLA residents and faculty from Pediatrics, OB-GYN, Surgery and Emergency Medicine; furthermore, it shares an Internal Medicine residency training program with the Sepulveda VA program. Its major outpatient facility is the Mid-Valley Comprehensive Health Center, which is home to our Mid Valley Family Health Center.
