Curriculum:
PGYII Î Gynecology

Goals:

The goals of the curriculum in Gynecology are to provide the Family Medicine resident with a sound basic understanding of and the skills to provide gynecologic care for a typical female patient population.

Objectives:

Residents will:

Patient Care and Medical Knowledge

1.Evaluate and manage common gynecologic problems including pelvic pain, vaginitis, PID, uterine bleeding, menopausal management, premenstrual syndrome, and the abnormal Pap smear.

2.Have learned the diagnostic approach necessary to identify or “rule-out” the woman with a potential ectopic pregnancy.

3.Be able to perform an outpatient/emergency room cervical dilation and uterine curettage procedure for such conditions as incomplete spontaneous abortions.

4.Understand the diagnostic approach and treatment options for a woman presenting for emergency/acute care with abnormal bleeding.

5.Provide a comprehensive array of family planning services.

6.Provide basic sexual counseling.

7.Define normal and abnormal female anatomy.

8.Recognize patients in need of consultation and management by a gynecologic specialist.

Practice Based Learning and Improvement

1.Be able to use the internet to access current literature about Gynecology.

2.Be able to access the internet and other resources to provide patient education materials.

3.Be able to implement changes in the care of women based on new information obtained from clinical experience, faculty teaching, independent reading, and other sources.

Interpersonal Communication Skills

1.Communicate effectively with patients

a.Able to communicate in a manner in which the patient and the family of a patient are able to successfully understand both routine and pathologic gynecologic states, and any prognostic, diagnostic and treatment options

b.Able to listen to and address the concerns of patients and their families in the various outpatient clinical settings in which Gynecologic care is provided

2.Communicate effectively with colleagues

a.Able to work efficiently in the care of women in various outpatient settings

b.Able to clearly communicate the patient visit to the Gynecology attending, including history, physical, assessment and plan

c.Able to work efficiently with the support staff in the care of women in various outpatient clinical settings

Welcome to the OB/GYN Department!÷ We want to make your stay with us a positive learning experience.÷ To help facilitate this, some basic information you need is outlined below.

  1. Check in with our Housestaff Coordinator, Ms. Cynthia Varela.÷ Her office is located at 1000 West Carson Street, Main Hospital first floor (room 1A4).÷ The office phone number: (310) 222-3886.÷ Cynthia can answer questions you may have regarding meals and parking, etc. (see note at bottom of this page regarding Cynthia’s office location.
  2. Ms. Kim Burtle, CNM coordinates the Family Planning activities with Dr. Anita Nelson in the Family Planning Clinic (Building N-28).÷ Kim can be reached at (310) 222-3715.÷ As you will note from the attached GYN Clinic Schedule, Family Planning is scheduled on Tuesday mornings.÷ If, for some reason, Dr. Nelson is not available, report to the OB/GYN Ambulatory Clinics on the first floor of the Medical Center.
  3. After checking-in with Cynthia (see #1 above), report to the Urgent Care Area.÷ The staff their will orient you.÷
  4. If you have your medical license and/ or your DEA, please bring a copy of these documents on your first day to Harbor.
  5. All residents need to provide a copy of the HIPPA certificate.÷ You can download the form from http://www.mednet.ucla.edu/hipaa/
  6. If there is a change and/or restrictions in your rotation schedule while assigned to this rotation, you must notify Cynthia as soon as possible (see #1 above).
