Goals:
The goals of the rotation in Emergency Medicine are to teach the Family Medicine residents principles of recognition and management of acute life-threatening conditions, rapid assessment and coordination in crisis-oriented settings, and clinical experience in the performance of basic and advanced cardiac life support.
Objectives:
Residents will:
Patient Care and Medical Knowledge
- Achieve competence in the triage of emergency patients, both under ordinary and disaster circumstances
- Achieve competence at the family practice level in evaluating and managing critical emergencies, including ACLS skills
- Achieve competence in the diagnosis and management of acute trauma, including lacerations, head and neck injuries, sprains and fractures
- Achieve competence in the diagnosis and treatment of acute medical illnesses, including cardiac diseases, pulmonary disorders, and the acute abdomen
- Achieve competence in the diagnosis and treatment of acute OB/GYN disorders
Practice Based Learning and Improvement
- Be able to use the internet to access current literature in Emergency Medicine
- Be able to access the internet and other resources to provide patient education materials
- Be able to work well in the context of a team of providers in the Emergency Room
- Be able to implement changes in patient care based on new information obtained from clinical experience, faculty teaching, and independent reading
Interpersonal Communication Skills
- Communicate effectively with patients
- Able to communicate in a manner in which the patient and the family of a patient in the Emergency Room setting are able to successfully understand their disease, treatment and prognosis.
- Able to listen to and address the concerns of patients and their families in the Emergency Room setting
- Communicate effectively with colleagues
- Able to work efficiently in the context of an Emergency Room in a Los Angeles County Hospital
- Able to clearly communicate the patient visit to the Emergency Room attending, including history, physical, assessment and plan
- Able to work efficiently with the support staff in the care of the patient in the Emergency Room setting

Systems-Based Practice
- Demonstrate understanding of the care of the patient in the Emergency Room and how this care is different than in a continuity clinic or community hospital setting
- Coordinate care with ancillary services to improve the healthcare of the patient
- Assist patients in dealing with their medical issues
- Assist the patient in the navigation of the health care system
- Appropriate use of resources (clinic vs. ER)

Hours - All shifts are from 8:00 AM-8:00 PM. Check your FHC mailbox for a copy of the schedule.
Continuity Clinic - 13 clinics for the entire rotation
Call Schedule - This is a no call rotation.
Educational Half-Day - If you are not scheduled for the EMC, attendance is required.

If you know in advance of a schedule change request, please call Ms. Morisset ASAP.
Report to the Department of Emergency Medicine at 8:00 AM on the first assigned day of this rotation.
Notify the Attending Physician you will need to see Susi Morisset at 8:45 AM. (She is located in the Department of Emergency Medicine's administrative office, located in the North Annex Building, behind the Materials Management Warehouse.)
If you make changes to your schedule, or are unable to report for work, you must notify the Department of Emergency Medicine's Administrative Office.
