For Prospective Residents

Curriculum:
PGYII Elective

Goals:

The goals of an elective rotation are to provide each resident the opportunity to augment their medical education with clinical experiences that will be useful from both an educational and a personal interest perspective.

Elective Criteria:  General guidelines for an elective rotation should be:

(a)  The experience has appropriate supervision by an attending physician

(b)  The experience is educationally sound

(c)  The experience is approved by the Program Director

(d)  Continuity Clinics must be preserved

(e)  Educational Half – Days must be attended

(f)    Must be geographically in the Los Angeles area

Logistics: 

Elective request forms must be submitted at least 3 weeks before the start of the proposed elective.

How to submit an elective request:

1)    Figure out what elective you wish to do, contact the attending and obtain permission to rotate with him or her.  The attending must either sign the elective request form or you may attach an e-mail from the attending giving you permission.

2)    Go to our website (http://fm.mednet.ucla.edu/fmresidents/)

a.     Click on “For Residents only”

b.     Click on “Information for Residents”

c.     Click on “Elective Request (form)”

3)    Type in all the required information in the yellow squares.

a.     For help – please see your Program Director, your Chief Resident, or the residency support staff

b.     The form needs to be typed, not handwritten.

c.     Goals and Objectives must be stated

d.     On the Proposed Schedule page, you must include

1)    Your continuity clinics for the entire time period

2)    EHD on Wednesday AM for each week (EHD is generally a required portion of your elective

3)    The days you will spend at your elective

4)    SAVE the file to your computer.  Please name it in such a way that it has meaning (example – residentname-elective)

5)    Send Dr. Sur an e-mail with your saved elective request as an attachment

6)    You will be notified by e-mail that the elective is either approved or not approved.  If it is not approved, I will let you know why not.  The form will then be sent to the residency support staff for malpractice certificate approval
