For Prospective Residents
Curriculum:
Goals:
|
The goal of the Away Elective is to provide each resident the opportunity to have an elective that is geographically located away from the resident’s continuity clinic, and provides a unique educational experience. This unique rotation must be a rural, international or underserved experience. |
Qualifications for an away elective:
|
In order for a rotation taken away from the UCLA geographic area to qualify for an Away Elective, it must have Goals and Objectives, as well as meet criteria set by both UCLA and the Department of Family Medicine. The Program Director must approve this rotation at least 8 weeks in advance. |
UCLA Criteria The following information was obtained from the UCLA website for Away Elective Policies on May 18, 2004.
Residents may participate in outside electives if the following criteria are addressed:
1. Elective must not exceed four weeks in duration.
2. Elective must have educational value and be of superior educational quality.
3. Elective must have Goals and Objectives that are written and meet RRC/ACGME Essentials.
4. Resident participation must be evaluated using the Core ACGME competencies and Goals and Objectives for the rotation.
5. A Letter of Agreement or MOU must exist with the receiving Program/Institution accepting responsibility for resident training, supervision, evaluation and staying within ACGME and RRC guidelines on work duty.
6. Malpractice should be assumed by the accepting institutions.
7. Salary and Benefits need to be addressed. For short rotations that cannot be provided through UCLA's affiliations, these should be continued to be paid by UCLA.
8. Travel, lodging and other trip-related expenses are the responsibility of the resident unless part of the training program and agreed to prior to the rotation.
9. There must be a Program policy on how to apply for away rotations, amount of time away and make up of core educational session (if applicable).
10. For international rotations, in addition to the above, the county to be visited MUST NOT have a U.S. State Department "Travel Warning".
Departmental Criteria - The rotation must be a rural, international, underserved or a unique experience that could not otherwise be obtained in the geographic area of the resident’s continuity clinic. This rotation may not be longer than 4 weeks in length.
