Goals:
By the end of this rotation the resident will have a better understanding of the impact of psychiatric disorders and psychosocial issues and how these psychiatric disorders and psychosocial issues have impact on the health care of patients, in both direct and indirect ways. Additionally, each resident will become more familiar with the Practice Management aspect of health care and improve their procedural skills.
Objectives:
Residents will:
Patient Care and Medical Knowledge
- Be able to obtain a thorough psychiatric history and a thorough family psychiatric history
- Be able to obtain a social history
- Be able to screen patients for psychiatric illness
- Assess the suicidal patient
- Screen for eating disorders
- Screen for psychotic disorders
- Screen for substance abuse disorders
- Screen for depressive and bipolar disorders in children and adults
- Screen for anxiety disorders in children and adults
- Screen for ADHD in children and adults
- Screen for autism
- Be able to demonstrate the ability to make a home visit
- Be able to ascertain which patients necessitate a referral to a Psychiatrist
- Be able to ascertain which patients require referral to a therapist and/or a social workers
- Be able to coordinate the health care of patients who also need care from Behavioral Scientists
- Be able to have a basic understanding of psychopharmacology
- Be able to have a basic understanding of drug interactions with psychotropic medications
- Be able to recognize a psychiatric emergency
- Be able to have a deeper understanding of the Practice Management side of the modern health care system
- Be able to review charts for quality improvement
- Be able to consent patients for procedures performed in the continuity health center
- Be able to perform procedures offered at their continuity health center
Practiced Based Learning and Improvement
- Be able to use the internet to access current literature about Behavioral Health topics
- Be able to access the internet and other resources to provide patient education materials on Behavioral Health issues
- Be able to implement changes in patient care based on new information obtained from clinical experience, faculty teaching, and independent reading
- Be able to consult the behavioral science faculty on all complicated psychiatric issues
Interpersonal Communication Skills
- Communicate effectively with patients
- Be able to communicate in a manner in which the patient and the family of a patient with a psychiatric or social problem are able to successfully understand their disease or issue, as well as the treatment and prognosis
- Be able to listen to and address the concerns of patients and their families in the various settings
- Communicate effectively with colleagues
- Be able to work efficiently in the care of the patient with a psychiatric or social problem in various contexts and to clearly communicate the needs the patient has to other professionals
- Be able to clearly communicate to the supervising attending physician the history, physical, assessment and plan
- Be able to work efficiently with Biobehavioral staff in the care of the patient with psychiatric or social problems

- Assist patients in dealing with their medical, social and psychiatric issues

Continuity Clinic - 6 clinics a week, with 5 to 6 clinics being replaced with Practice Management sessions:

Call Schedule - This is a call free rotation.
Educational Half Day - Attendance is required.
Additional Information
- Residents at the Mid Valley site may also have sessions scheduled for the Olive View Medical Center In Patient Service to round on Mid Valley Family Medicine patients who are admitted to Olive View Medical Center
- Residents may have one-on-one session with our Behavioral Scientists for their interactions with patients and support staff, including the nursing staff
