Goals
The goals and objectives of the curriculum in Obstetrics are to learn the evaluation and management of normal labor and delivery and to be able to promptly identify patients at risk for obstetrical and medical complications that are best managed with consultation. Residents are expected to become knowledgeable with respect to antenatal risk management and appropriate perinatal referral, routine antenatal care, intrapartum assessment, non-operative vaginal deliveries and post-partum management
Objectives
Patient Care and Medical Knowledge
Residents will:
- Be able to perform an obstetrical history and physical examination either for the initiation of prenatal care or for the evaluation of the maternity patient presenting to labor & delivery
- Understand "normal" labor patterns for primiparous and multiparous patients and be able to differentiate these from dysfunctional labor patterns
- Have gained skill in evaluating acute obstetrical conditions such as vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, preterm labor, postpartum hemorrhage and postpartum fevers
- Be aware of the general indications for induction of labor and/or its augmentation
- Be able to assist on C-sections

Demonstrate proficiency in:
- Vaginal delivery
- Amniotomy
- Episiotomy
- Electronic fetal monitoring
- Pitocin induction
- Repair of obstetrical lacerations
- Management and diagnosis of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy
- Diagnosis and management of pre-term labor
- Basic obstetrical ultrasound
- Diagnosis and management of obstetric bleeding
- Outlet vacuum extraction
- Pudendal anesthesia
Practice-Based Learning and Improvement
- Be able to use the internet to access current literature about the obstetrical medical management
- Be able to critically evaluate literature about current obstetrical disease management
- Be able to work well in the context of the obstetrical care team
- Be able to implement changes in patient care based on new information obtained from Attending Rounds, clinical experience, review of the literature and other sources
Interpersonal Communication Skills

- Able to communicate in a manner understandable to the patient and the family of a pregnant patient regarding the delivery process or underlying obstetrical problem, treatment plan and prognosis
- Able to listen to and address the concerns of patients and their families

- Able to clearly communicate patient sign-out, both when giving and receiving sign-out

- Assist patients in dealing with their pregnancy, labor, delivery and any complications of pregnancy

Additional Information
Hours: Average 2 weeks of days, average 2 weeks of nights
Days: Mon-Thurs 7AM-6PM, Fri 7AM-Sat 8AM
Nights:Mon-Thurs 6PM-7AM, Sun 8AM-Mon 7AM
Continuity Clinic: 2 clinics / rotation
- On Days: Wed PM
- Call: 1 day a week
- Days: Friday
- Nights: Sunday
Educational Half Day: You are not excused from OB Cedars to attend EHD
