Goals

The goals of the internal medicine rotation are that the resident learns to recognize those internal medicine problems that can be managed by the family physician as well as to recognize those that require a referral to a consultant

Objectives

Patient Care and Medical Knowledge

Residents will:

  1. Be able to perform a complete history and physical examination
  2. Be able to generate a problem list for each patient
  3. Be able to formulate a diagnostic and therapeutic management plan
  4. Be able to appropriately order and interpret diagnostic studies
  5. Acquire the skills to perform appropriate procedures, including the knowledge of indications, potential adverse effects, and interpretation of resultant findings
  6. Understand the indications, efficacy and adverse effects of medical therapeutics
  7. Be able to present patient cases and problems to the faculty attending in a concise and organized fashion
  8. Be able to handle medical emergencies
  9. Be able to keep medical records in a concise and timely fashion
  10. Exhibit appropriate and professional relationships when dealing with patients and their families
  11. Exhibit appropriate maturity, intellectual honesty, and judgment commensurate with their level of training
  12. Exhibit ability to cooperate with medical colleagues and paramedical staff

Practice-Based Learning and Improvement

  1. Be able to use the Internet to access current literature about diseases seen in the wards
  2. Be able to critically evaluate literature about current medical treatment of diseases seen in the wards
  3. Be able to work well in the context of the Ward Medical Team
  4. Be able to implement changes in patient care based on new information obtained from Attending Rounds, clinical experience, review of the literature and other sources

Interpersonal Communication Skills

  1. Communicate effectively with patients
    1. Able to communicate in a manner understandable to the patient and the family of a patient with a medical condition requiring hospitalization
    2. Acute problem that hospitalized the patient
    3. Chronic medical conditions the patient may have
    4. Treatment plan
    5. Prognosis
    6. Able to listen to and address the concerns of patients and their families
    7. Communicate effectively with colleagues
  2. Able to work efficiently in the context of a Medical Team in a tertiary care hospital
  3. Able to clearly communicate patient sign-out, both when giving and receiving sign-out
  4. Able to work efficiently with the support staff in the care of the hospitalized adult medical patient

Systems-Based Practice

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the care of the adult medical patient in the context of the current healthcare system in a tertiary care center
  2. Coordinate care with ancillary services to improve the healthcare of the patient
  3. Assist patients in dealing with their acute illness and any underlying chronic diseases they may have

Location: UCLA Center for Health Sciences

*** Page the Senior Resident (name is listed on the monthly assignment sheet) to determine the
reporting location and time for the first day of the rotation. You should also receive the name of the Junior Resident to contact to receive sign-out for the patients you will be assuming care.

Continuity Clinic - 2 clinics / rotation

Call Schedule - This rotation has a new q5 day system, with no overnight call.

The template is as follows:

  • Long call (team cap of 10 patients, or 8 pm, whichever comes first)
  • Post call (no admits)
  • S2 (Short 2 - team admits 4, or 4 pm, whichever comes sooner)
  • S1 (Short 1 - team admits 2, or 4 pm. whichever comes sooner - There is no S1 on the weekends)
  • Pre call (no admits)

**There is some overnight call, only on Friday and Saturday nights.

Educational Half Day - You are not excused from Medicine to attend EHD.

The Call Schedule is available from the Department of Medicine, room 32-115 CHS. The Day Off Schedule will be sent to your Outlook E-mail address. Please check both places regularly. You are required to attend Education Day activities whenever your schedule permits. Please also check the internal medicine website - this site includes schedules, nuts and bolts of each rotation. If you are prompted for a password, please contact your Chief Resident for the username and password.
