Goals
The goals of the internal medicine rotation are that the resident learns to recognize those internal medicine problems that can be managed by the family physician as well as to recognize those that require a referral to a consultant
Objectives
Patient Care and Medical Knowledge
Residents will:
- Be able to perform a complete history and physical examination
- Be able to generate a problem list for each patient
- Be able to formulate a diagnostic and therapeutic management plan
- Be able to appropriately order and interpret diagnostic studies
- Acquire the skills to perform appropriate procedures, including the knowledge of indications, potential adverse effects, and interpretation of resultant findings
- Understand the indications, efficacy and adverse effects of medical therapeutics
- Be able to present patient cases and problems to the faculty attending in a concise and organized fashion
- Be able to handle medical emergencies
- Be able to keep medical records in a concise and timely fashion
- Exhibit appropriate and professional relationships when dealing with patients and their families
- Exhibit appropriate maturity, intellectual honesty, and judgment commensurate with their level of training
- Exhibit ability to cooperate with medical colleagues and paramedical staff
Practice-Based Learning and Improvement
- Be able to use the Internet to access current literature about diseases seen in the wards
- Be able to critically evaluate literature about current medical treatment of diseases seen in the wards
- Be able to work well in the context of the Ward Medical Team
- Be able to implement changes in patient care based on new information obtained from Attending Rounds, clinical experience, review of the literature and other sources

Educational Half Day - You are not excused from Medicine to attend EHD.
