For Prospective Residents

PGYI Geriatrics

Goals

Through continuity care, the resident learns the importance of lifestyle in the young and middle-aged adult and its'effects on the older adult. In addition, residents will learn to assist geriatric patients to function independently and to preserve their quality of life.

Objectives

Patient Care and Medical Knowledge

Residents will:

  1. Understand the "normal" physiologic, psychologic, social and environmental changes of aging
  2. Be aware of unique, atypical and common presentations of disease processes or biopsychosocial dysfunction in the elderly
  3. Be aware of disease screening and health maintenance recommendations specific to the elderly
  4. Recognize government and voluntary community resources available to assist the elderly
  5. Have learned a targeted approach to comprehensive geriatric assessment and understand the role of multiple disciplines in caring for the older individual
  6. Have presented a didactic conference to faculty and housestaff on a topic relevant to geriatrics

Practiced-Based Learning and Improvement

  1. Be able to use the internet to access current literature about Geriatric medicine topics
  2. Be able to access the internet and other resources to provide patient education materials
  3. Be able to work well in the context of the team of providers in the care of the Geriatric patient
  4. Be able to implement changes in patient care based on new information obtained from clinical experience, faculty teaching, and independent reading

Interpersonal Communication Skills

  1. Communicate effectively with patients
    1. Able to communicate in a manner understandable to the geriatric patient and the family of a geriatric patient are able to successfully understand the disease and it's treatment and prognosis
    2. Able to listen to and address the concerns of geriatric patients and their families
  2. Communicate effectively with colleagues
    1. Able to work efficiently in the context of team of providers in the care of the geriatric patient
    2. Able to clearly communicate the issues of a geriatric patient to other professionals providing care to the geriatric patient, including current medical problems, history, physical, assessment and plan
    3. Able to work efficiently with the support staff in the care of the geriatric patient

Systems-Based Practice

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the care of the geriatric patient how the care of the elderly is different than the non-elderly
  2. Coordinate care with ancillary services to improve the healthcare of the patient
  3. Assist patients in dealing with their medical issues
  4. Assist the patient in the navigation of the health care system
    1. Appropriate use of resources (clinic vs. ER)
    2. Appropriate follow-up
      1. Medical studies
      2. Laboratory studies
    3. Patient follow-up

Additional information

This is a unique rotation with a variety of educational and clinical experiences. Each resident will rotate through a variety of clinics with relevance to the geriatric patient. Each resident will prepare and present a topic that pertains to the care of the elderly patient. Additionally, there are several didactic sessions with various medical professionals to teach in the small group environment. Each resident will also make home visits and/or nursing home visits.

Continuity Clinic: 8 Clinics / rotation. Clinic will generally be Wednesday afternoon and Thursday mornings.

Educational Half Day: Attendance is required.

Call Schedule: This is a no call rotation.
