UCLA/VA Multicampus Primary Care and Health Services Research Fellowship Program

Introduction

The UCLA/VA Multicampus Primary Care and Health Services Research Fellowship program provides primary and ambulatory care-oriented physicians with the necessary skills to become effective and creative leaders in shaping health care and health policy. The program brings together three distinct post-residency training fellowships that share a common purpose and administration. Program faculty provide doctoral level training in clinical epidemiology, health services evaluation and biostatistics. Advanced training in relevant clinical, medical, and teaching skills such as medical informatics, geriatrics and women's health can be integrated into the program upon request.

All fellowships share the following core components:

Formal course work, usually leading to a degree, at the UCLA School of Public Health
Informal course work in doctoral seminars.
The completion of an independent research project.

In addition to course work, fellows choose a social scientist and a clinician to serve as individual mentors for designing and completing a research project. Mentors include well-known investigators from the UCLA Divisions of General Internal Medicine and Family Medicine, the General Internal Medicine sections at West LA VAMC and the Sepulveda VAMC, the UCLA School of Public Health and the RAND Health Sciences Program. These institutions encourage the kind of collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment most likely to foster successful health services research. Opportunities are available to study almost any aspect of health services or health policy, including access to care, quality of care, clinical epidemiology, preventive care, women's health, ethics, and the care of patients with specific diseases or psychosocial problems.

Participating Fellowships

Primary Care Research Fellowship

This fellowship, funded by the Health Resources Services Administration, began in 1988 and it is open to general internists, family physicians and pediatricians. Fellows in this program do their clinical work at the UCLA Center for the Health Sciences.

Ambulatory Care Fellowship

These fellowships, funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, began in 1990 and 1994 at the West LA VAMC and the Sepulveda VAMC respectively. They are open to ambulatory care physicians including general internists, medical subspecialists who provide ambulatory care, and psychiatrists. Fellow in these programs will do their clinical work at the respective Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Women's Health Fellowship

This fellowship, funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, is open to primary care physicians, obstetricians and gynecologists who are interested in research into women's health issues. Fellows in this program develop competency in clinical skills and procedure's in women's health care through their clinical work at the interdisciplinary Women's Health Center at the respective VA Medical Center.

Fellowship Applicants

Applicants must have completed both their MD degree and Residency training by the date of their entry into the program. Applications are encouraged from the persons with some post-residency training as well as persons just completing their residency. Applications will be asked to indicate their preferences from among the participating programs and sites.
