UCLA Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (CHPDP)

Postdoctoral Scholar with UCLA Department of Family Medicine

We are currently accepting applications for a position beginning in Spring 2008.

Steven Shoptaw, Ph.D., professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, is recruiting for a Postdoctoral Scholar to assist with his program of clinical research. Studies conducted by Dr. Shoptaw and his group range from clinical trials to develop medication and behavioral therapies for methamphetamine dependence to clinical epidemiology studies that assess behavioral risks (including drug use) that are linked to the spread of infectious diseases (i.e., HIV and other sexually transmitted infections). Dr. Shoptaw's research work is conducted in primary care clinics at UCLA, which provides opportunities for involvement in evidence-based prevention and behavioral medicine activities in outpatient clinic contexts. The candidate must be interested in studying all aspects of intervention development (i.e., grant writing, protocol development, regulatory and research procedures, data analysis and manuscript submission) and in developing a career working with communities with healthcare disparities. The postdoctoral scholar should have the goal of becoming an independently funded clinical investigator.

The candidate will provide oversight to a study that assesses the efficacy and safety of a pharmacotherapy approach for initiating abstinence and for preventing relapse to methamphetamine use. The study is unique in that it is a randomized controlled trial that includes 5 days of hospital-based procedures in a 15-week, primarily outpatient based, randomized clinical trial. The clinic sites include the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital and the UCLA Les Kelley Family Health Center. Additional opportunities to participate with other clinical research activities are provided at sites in Hollywood and Rancho Cucamonga.

Candidates with experience in conducting clinical research, especially clinical trials are strongly encouraged to apply, although we will provide training in clinical research to candidates who are interested in pursuing this career direction. The postdoctoral candidate will work most closely with Dr. Steven Shoptaw and Dr. Michelle Anne Bholat in the Department of Family Medicine. A doctoral degree is required and individuals who are license eligible are encouraged to apply. Verbal fluency in Spanish language is a plus, but not required.

Interested candidates should email Dr. Shoptaw directly at sshoptaw@mednet.ucla.edu or call him directly at (310) 794 - 6206.

UCLA is an equal opportunity employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
