Teaching
Mentoring
Our faculty mentor undergraduates, residents, and fellows from multiple departments within the University. As part of UCLA’s Student Research Program, undergraduate students are given opportunities to develop basic research skills as they engage in research activities under the direction of one of our faculty mentors. For medical residents and fellows, they are given opportunities to observe physicians working with addiction patients in our clinics and to be observed by our physicians as they work with these patients. In addition, they are trained in structured, psychiatric interviewing techniques and cognitive behavioral therapy. Our Center Director provides individual mentorship to junior faculty, many of whom have gone on to receive career development awards and other research funding.
Seminars in Addiction Psychiatry
At this weekly series, speakers present on various topics within the field of addiction. Our Center Director helped to start this series and our faculty are frequent presenters. For more information, visit the UCLA Registrar's Office and search for seminars under Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences/PSYCTRY 434.
Clinical Supervision
All Center staff who conduct behavioral therapy with research patients receive regular supervision from experienced faculty who provide one-on-one training and oversight.
Community Education
Our Center staff and faculty conduct regular presentations and trainings in the community on the topics of Addiction and HIV/AIDS. The Center works closely with the County of Los Angeles to train its network of community clinics and service providers. Center faculty and staff provide technical assistance and/or training at regular meetings of the HIV Drug and Alcohol Task Force and Los Angeles Methamphetamine Task Forces as well as sessions hosted by the Pacific AIDS Education Training Center.
