Office-Based Treatment for Substance Use

Our Center initiated an office-based treatment program for substance users at the UCLA Les Kelley Family Health Center. This program utilizes FDA-approved medication to treat dependence on opioids (including painkillers and heroin), as well as nicotine or alcohol in the privacy of the doctor's office, under the supervision of UCLA physicians with expertise in treatment of addiction. For more information, call us at 1-866-449-UCLA or email us at chpdp@mednet.ucla.edu.

Clinical Trials for Stimulant Dependence

For dependence on stimulants, such as methamphetamine, there are no FDA-approved medications. Our Center conducts clinical trials to test medications that show promise in treating other illnesses that have similar effects on the brain as stimulants and that have been proven safe for stimulant users. Trial participants are assigned to either the test medication or a placebo (sugar pill) and all meet regularly with a staff counselor for behavioral therapy. Housing Services for HIV Positives

Through our Safe House program, our Center offer emergency, transitional and permanent housing to homeless individuals who are HIV positive and have serious mental illness or chemical dependency. Located in North Hollywood, the program was established in 1997 to provide a comfortable refuge for those who are living with HIV/AIDS using principles of high tolerance. Residents must be referred to Safe House by a case manager, housing provider, or HIV service provider. For more information, visit Safe House.

Behavioral Treatment Intervention for Gay and Bisexual Male Methamphetamine Users

This 8 week, 24-session cognitive behavioral therapy intervention is designed to reduce substance use and high-risk sexual behaviors among gay and bisexual male methamphetamine users. The core elements of the intervention include teaching skills to identify triggers to relapse, interrupt cravings for drug use, and return to abstinence should relapse occur. Drug use reduction skills include thought stopping, craving management, and relapse analysis. Skills for reducing sexual risk behaviors include identifying sexual triggers, using visualization, "urge surfing," and thought-stopping techniques to reduce combined drug and sexual cravings.
