Rotation Curriculum by Year

PGYI

  • Behavioral Science SM (0.5 month)
This is broken up into 2 one-week rotations throughout the PGY-1 year. We spend time with our staff psychiatrist, staff psychologist, and staff social worker discussing psychiatric disorders and psychosocial issues we encounter with patients. We also do home visits for our clinic patients during this rotation. This is a non-call rotation, and weekends are free.
  • Cardiology SM (1 month)
We rotate through the UCLA Santa Monica Cardiology clinic for this rotation and work closely with our cardiologists in the office and hospital settings. Call is optional, and weekends are usually free.
  • ER SM (1 month)
During this rotation, we work alongside our UCLA Santa Monica Emergency Department attendings triaging, diagnosing, and managing patients in the ED. We are the only residents that currently rotate through the Santa Monica ED. As such, we are able to do a large number of procedures, from intubations and lumbar punctures to laceration repair and I&Ds. This is a non-call rotation and we have two days off each week.
  • Geriatrics SM/OV (0.5 month)
We spend time working with UCLA geriatricians, and rotate through subspecialty clinics such as UCLA Santa Monica Urology, the UCLA Osteoporosis Center, and Memory Disorders Center at Olive View Medical Center, while working at our continuity clinics. This is a non-call rotation, and weekends are free.
  • ICU OV (1 month)
This rotation is based at our Olive View-UCLA Hospital, where we work alongside Medicine residents admitting and managing the two-wing ICU. We learn about vent management here, as well as gain more experience with intubations and central line placement. Common diagnoses seen in this ICU are sepsis, DKA, and respiratory failure. Call consists of both days and nights, and there is an average of one day off in every seven days.
  • IPS SM - Family Medicine Inpatient Service (2 months)

This team consists of two PGY-1s, two PGY-2s, and one PGY-3 and is staffed by our family medicine attendings. We also work closely with the UCLA Internal Medicine hospitalist team, receiving further bedside teaching. As the IPS team, we admit pediatric and adult patients, and we deliver our continuity OB patients as well as OB patients who do not have UCLA physicians. We manage patients in the ICU with our intensivists, and function as the "on-call" physician for our continuity clinics. We are the only overnight residents at UCLA-SM Hospital, and we are the Code Blue and rapid response team for the hospital. This is a 14-hour shift work schedule q4, and there is an average of one day off in every seven.
